Since Harriett maintains the entire rest of this website, it's only fair that I have a page to myself.  So here are my choices: the rare finds, great bargains, esoteric gems.  These are all worth a closer look and consideration.  Hmm, maybe these books won't make it to the shop after all...

Two first editions by William Pene du Bois

Fierce JohnFIERCE JOHN, story by Edward Fenton, illustrated by William pene Du Bois, Doubleday & Company, NY, 1959, First Edition (stated).  Small book (6"x9"), 60 pages, b&w line drawings highlighted with gold, text is easy-reader style, yellow cloth with red decoration, nice dust jacket that may be a replacement (from another copy of book).  Wonderful humorous lion, and appealing story.  VG/VG    $75.

Otto at SeaOTTO AT SEA, by William Pene du Bois, Viking Press, 1936, First Printing.  Small 6" square book with great full color plates facing text on each page.  Later editions of this book are in a larger size format, but this size and quality is the one to have.  Interior is very good condition, but cover is rubbed and corners are rubbed and there are 2 small pieces missing from spine cover extremities.  No marks or tears. VG    <SOLD>

Three rare old Lois Lenski books

Little Rag DollLITTLE RAG DOLL, by Ethel Calvert Phillips, illustrated by Lois Lenski, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1930, probable first edition.  This very scarce early Lenski item has 173 pages, 8vo, cloth cover with perfect color paste-on, very good dj (small chip out of front at bottom edge), four wonderful color plates plus 80 in-text b&w illustrations.  The lovely story is an adventure about a little rag doll who runs away from home because she is mistreated, and sets up houskeepking in a better place.  F/VG    $150.

SUGARPLUM HOUSE, words and pictures by Lois Lenski, Harper and Brothers, 1935 (M-K), hand-set in Futura type by Arthur and Edna Rushmore at the Golden Hind Press, Madison, NJ.  Alternating green and red type facing like-color full page illustration in the style of the "Small" books. Oblong format, 9-1/2" x 6-1/2",  32 pages plus endpapers on heavy stock paper, no marks or tears, very good condition inside, some soil and wear to covers (but spine cover paper is all intact).  Charming!  VG    $75.

Susie MariarSUSIE MARIAR, pictures by Lois Lenski, Henry Z. Walck, NY, 1967 (1939). Oblong, 38 pages, red and yellow color for illustrations, yellow cloth binding, nice dj, reprint edition and library discard.  Missing free endpapers, and showing library pocket remnants inside front cover, otherwise in very good condition.  Susie Mariar is an old folk rhyme, known in different versions in different parts of the USA.  Version used here is based on southern collection of Dr. James M. Carpenter, with several verses from New England added. $35.

HONEY BEAR
written by Dixie Willson, illustrated by Maginel Wright Barney (sister of architect Frank Lloyd Wright), published by The P. F. Volland Company, Joliet, Illinois, 1923, 19th edition.  Gorgeous illustrations and charmingly dated sweet little story make this one of the all-time-favorite "Sunny Books" published by the popular Volland company.  This copy is in much better than average condition for this well loved book.  The binding edges are gently worn all around, and there are a few short tears up from the bottom edge of some pages near the hinge, not affecting any images and occasionally mended with archival tape, and one page has a small piece missing at bottom near hinge.  There are no marks or large tears or serious dirt, and the colors of endpapers and illustrations are quite brilliant.  Overall a near Very Good copy.  <SOLD>
