After two and a half years, Dede and I
were running out of room in our combined books-and-rugs store. So,
we knocked down some walls to the adjacent storefront and doubled our space.
Most sections doubled in size, and therefore in selection, most notably
the children's sections, art, antiques & collectibles, literature,
and women's studies. I was busy building bookshelves for a couple of months,
oh rapture! Here we are, hard at work. The new space did not come
with a beautiful floor, and since the rugs need proper display too, we
figured we better show them off on a decent hard wood floor. Believe it
or not, there really is a floor under all this mess. But we had to remove
industrially-glued teal carpeting, two layers of tile, and nasty tarpaper
first. Then we sanded and stained the floor, and wow, it looks like a whole
new place!
Then we took down the wall that divided our "old" space and the new
space. (Notice that beautiful floor under the sheet!) It was exciting to
see the spaces united, both with the same color walls and floors!, and
then the real project began: building new shelves, moving bookshelves (including
two 18-foot sections), and filling them all up with, what else?, books!!
Here are some friends of mine helping out during my infamous "Tear Down
the Wall Party." The wall that you can see behind the bookshelves is the
wall that we removed in the above picture, so we had to take books off
the shelves first, before we could put them back on the shelves...
and there's my brother on the right helping to attach the two 18 foot
long bookshelf units to the wall (so they don't go anywhere!). Look, the
books are already starting to multiply!
