Depending how you define feminst, there have been feisty and strong female role models in children's literature dating back to Alice in Wonderland.  This list includes some of the older well-loved titles as well as some more contemporary tales to teach your children to grow up strong and independent and to believe in a world of peace and equality.

Harriet and the Promised Land  by Jacob Lawrence  Jacob Lawrence was one of the Harlem Rennaisance artists who brought Black culture into the cultural limelight, and his drawings of a headstrong and determined Harriet Tubman are an inspiration to us all.	Mirette on the High Wire  by Emily Arnold McCully  Mirette's inspiration comes from a legendary tight-rope walker, but in the end it is she who is teaches the legend.
Swamp Angel by Anne Isaacs illustrated by  Paul O. Zelinsky You say there is no female Paul Bunyan of American folklore?  Then you haven't met the Swamp Angel yet.  She'll quiet literally lift you out of your doldroms and give any male tall tale a run for the money.	Brave Irene  by William Steig Well, someone has to deliver the gown to the ball, but there's a terrible blizzard and the seamstress is too exhausted and ill after the creation of this great gown to deliver it.  So her daughter Irene goes, and isn't it amazing what a little will power will power a little person to do?
Hunting the White Cow  by Tres Seymour illustrated by Wendy Anderson Halperin The missing white cow eludes everyone's best efforts to recapture her.  Our young heroine is never invited on the capturing crusades, but she finds the white cow all by herself one day.  But even young feminists fail occasionally....	The Little Red Hen Illustrated by Paul Galdone "Then I will do it myself."  A story of self-reliance for every ambitious youngster.
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen The serenity of the country on a winter's night, and the warmth of a magical encounter shared with someone special. There's something magical in just being yourself.
