Annex Gallery: The Venus Series by Artist Irma Withani

Inspired by the natural beauty of the human form, Withani illustrates the female body's transformation over time and the loveliness of diverse body shapes in isolation, absent the head and feet. By excluding the subjects' faces, personality is removed from the image, exposing only the character of the naked pose, and the smooth, elegant contours of the torso and limbs.

Expanding the narrow, standard definition of an attractive figure, and hoping to enhance positive body image at various stages of life, these impressive, bold paintings exquisitely convey the beauty and aesthetic appeal of the female body in all its forms, and celebrate the goddess of love and beauty apparent in everyone

Annex Gallery: A Restless Mind by Scott Kraynak

The idea for this exhibit is to explore the extreme variety of my work and different subject matters: dark and creepy; political; beautiful; and, thought-provoking. Taken together, these works reflect the different passions which inspire my work and life, as well as showcasing the different mediums and styles in which I implement in my work. I will have my various books there for viewers to look through that further explore these themes. Prints will be available to raise money for causes important to me, which again reflect my passions. I feel that all of this taken together will give the viewer somewhat of an idea of how an artist's brain never seems to shut off.

Ava Reiss

Ava Reiss is a writer and illustrator from the Cleveland area. Her written works are science-fiction and fantasy, and she often turns to art for inspiration. Romantically, she recognizes we're all stardust and believes humanity holds a deeper connection to the cosmos than we take time to see. She hopes her installation will inspire others to relax by disconnecting from the day-to-day and drift pleasantly through the various colors and moods of the galaxy.

Joel Bartell

Joel was born and raised in Cleveland and is a graduate of Cooper School of Art where he studied both sculpting and painting. Joel finds inspiration in the flora and fauna of Northeast Ohio; his latest works have been an expression of his deep appreciation for the spectacular trees in the area. His paintings often feature a cropped subject matter in a style that draws inspiration from classic impressionism while incorporating the techniques of pointillism. Joel hopes to capture the beauty of the old, flowering and often twisted trees that line the streets of both Cleveland and Shaker Heights and impart feelings of familiarity and awe.

Shari Wolf

A Cleveland native, Shari Wolf paints, draws, collages, sews, and creates artists’ books. She currently creates designs digitally on her iPad using Procreate. Her distinctive personal style is whimsical, expressing the vibrant spirit of her curious mind.

After graduating from The Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in graphic design, she honed her creative skills as a designer and illustrator for American Greetings Corporation.

She has exhibited her work in many local galleries, including Loganberry Annex, Brecksville Center for the Arts, Beachwood Community Center, The Morgan Conservatory, and The Mandel Jewish Community Center. She has participated many local juried art shows including The JCC Fine Art Show, Waterloo Arts, and The Barbara Lutton Show. Her public works of art include Guitar Mania, and Beachwood Centennial Celebration.

She is an active member of the Textile Arts Alliance, Art Books Cleveland, and The Guild of Bookworkers.

Chuck Mintz

The Guardians of Transportation used to be one of those things that you would drive by, notice, wonder what the story was, and promptly forget. Over time, their history has become better known. They have grown into symbols of Cleveland. A few months ago, I was asked to photograph them for The Ohio History Connection’s magazine, Echoes. I almost never work this way but I have a long history with the folks in Columbus. the result was these images. I wanted to show the Guardians in their environment. First priority, of course, was to avoid getting run over by a bakery truck.

I also have a long history with Loganberry Books. They also have become a symbol of
Cleveland.

I hope the viewer is moved to question those things we see that have their own stories - the statues, the names over the entrances of apartment buildings, and those other details that make the city special. Photography is Chuck’s third career, the result of a passion acquired in Maine many years ago. Most of his work is done on large format film. Becoming full time in 2008 changed the work in profound ways. Previously, the people were anonymous and aimed at showing the public space. In this new time, the work has become intensely personal - often involving portraiture. Each project comes out of a story – someone’s Precious Objects, the steel houses in Lustron Stories, Andrew Carnegie and his Carnegie Libraries. Though the story is the framework, the meaning comes from what the subjects show us.

Chuck studied photography at Maine Photographic Workshop, Parsons School of Design, International Center for Photography, Lakeland Community College and Cuyahoga Community College. He has a BSEE from Purdue University and an MSEE from Cleveland State University. He serves on advisory boards at the Cleveland Print Room and the Artists Archive of the Western Reserve. Chuck is a Life Director at Jewish Family Services of Cleveland. His work can be found in museums, including the Smithsonian Museum of American History, and private and corporate collections in North America, Europe and Asia.

This artist was awarded an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award for 2017 and
2015.
