The Friends of Liberty mission is to present Libertarian ideas to Greater Clevelanders so they may encounter, evaluate and when appropriate embrace the ideas of self-government. We are non-political, though we discuss politics and are always looking for new ways to bring Libertarian concepts to Greater Cleveland.

Stop SECO

Don Gallick described the political demise of Athens County Prosecutor William Biddlestone at the last Friends of Liberty meeting. It all started when Thomas Koehnle and Don were discussing how current bureaucrats boast how they can walk over the Bill of Rights and expand their extorted budgets all in the name of the Drug War. When Biddlestone got a federal grant to form the Southeast Counties of Ohio Narcotics Task Force (SECO) and used it to invade a poor frail old man's house, Don and Tom got upset . They started calling people and the media, publicly asking if this excessive force was really necessary. They were surprised how easy it was to pass around a petition and collect 1,052 signatures. What surprised me was when the courts tossed out the "sea led" warrants as illegal, all the other miss dealings of William Biddlestone came to the surface. Biddlestone has gone from looking forward to a state political office to fighting for his liberty in a sexual abuse case!

Joe Slovenec for US Congress

Joe Slovenec has agreed to address the Sept 29th Friends of Liberty meeting. Joe will bring a video and answer questions as he tries to defeat Dennis the Menace Kasinich in the US Congress 10th district. His priorities include repealing the 16th Amendment, thus abolishing the Federal Income Tax. Making Social Security personal, private, and voluntary and introducing a constitutional amendment to ban property tax. (216) 486-2525

Mazen Al-Najjar, a pastor and scholar, who lives in Tampa, was arrested without charge in May by immigration agents and denied bail despite testimony of his good reputation and long ties to the community (he has been in the United States for 16 years, and his three daughters are U.S. citizens). No matter. Based on ''secret evidence,'' the immigration judge denied him bail.

Senate Bill 909, "The Secure Public Networks Act of 1997." would impose strict controls on the manufacture and use of technology that scrambles electronic data for privacy reasons. The proposal would prohibit the manufacture, sale, import or distribut ion within the United States of any such technology unless it contained a feature to permit immediate decoding of any message by law-enforcement officials with a wiretap order from a court. The law would also effect telephone companies and Internet provi ders.

The UN played a role in the worst genocide in recent memory. According to Peter Hammond of Frontline Fellowship, the Rwandan genocide of 1994 - in which a half-million Tutsis, most of them Christian, were slaughtered in 100 days - was abetted by the m alicious indifference of the UN. "Many of the mass murderers were employees of the international relief agencies," Hammond writes in Holocaust in Rwanda, his searing on-site testimony.

If you need to send your brother money for a family emergency and walked into your bank and purchased a $3500 money order, with money from your savings account. The teller handles your transaction and says nothing. You drop it in the mail and quickly forget about it. A few days later, you're arrested; and every penny in your savings account is seized. You're convicted of a felony--failure to file a "currency transaction report" (CTR), IRS Form 4789. And the teller stands to make up to $150,000!
