Vollands are a landmark in American publishing.  During the 10s and 20s when most of American children's book publishing was mimicking the better German and French publishing, and striving to keep up with the new advances in color reproduction, Volland was doing its own thing: something decisively new in format and content, original watercolor illustrations with art deco influences, and American stories.  The printing was sublime: a nice small size, heavy coated pages, beautiful typefaces, and stunning color-block style illustrations with delicate engraved lines.  When you see the originals, you know they're special.

The press was short-lived however.  Sometime in the early depression, Volland succumbed, and the rights were purchased by Wise Parslow.  These reprints are similar in spirit to the original Volland, but a little cheaper with stamped covers, and the illustrations further removed from the original watercolors.  They're still good reproductions done not long after the originals.

Wonderful illustrators like Elizabeth Gordon and John Rae called Volland their publishing home, but it was Johnny Gruelle's popularity that gained them fame.  Gruelle's Raggedy Ann and Andy stories were reprinted by Wise Parslow, then Donohue, eventually by his own Johnny Gruelle Company, and then by Avenel and Lemon Tree Press.  But he started with Volland, including the smaller square format called the Sunny Book Series. Both Vollands and Wise Parslow editions are listed in this catalog.

This holiday season has almost cleaned me out on this catalog....  please excuse the vast number of sold items listed here.  I'll replenish as soon as I can!

How to order

This is a self-made website by little old me, and while it might be big, it is not sophisticated.  The little buy icon icon takes you to a generic order form where you can type in the author, title, price, and indicate whether you would like to send me a check or PayPal payment.  I will confirm availability via e-mail, and once I've received payment, I'll ship the book.  It's that easy.  If you have questions,  please don't hesitate to ask  via email.

Condition Grades

There's a standard bookseller vocabulary, with terms like Fine, Very Good, Good and Poor to assess condition (to see these terms defined, click on the link above).  Most of my books are in Very Good or better condition, and I tend to overemphasize their flaws so that any surprise is a pleasant one.  Feel free to ask questions, and if the book isn't in the condition described, you may return it for a full refund.

Wants Lists

If I don't have the book you seek in stock, I will retain your book search in my wants files and email you when I do have a copy for sale. If you don't hear back from me immediately, that probably means I don't have a copy right now.  But fear not,  I keep extensive files and never stop looking....  so send me your request;  you've got nothing to lose!
